Email at 30000 Feet

June 10, 2008 3:04 PM

Yesterday, I was flying Jet Blue back from NYC and was on a Beta Blue jet. Service was poor but at least it is a start.

I visit NYC frequently and often take Jet Blue. I like Jet Blue. They've DirectTV on their planes, which means you can catch up on the sports report, the stock report or the latest Jerry Springer if that's your thing. About 30+ channels in all and then probably a 100 channels of XM radio. Also, their seat pitch is pretty good, meaning you can actually use your laptop.

Today, on the BetaBlue plane. They had 3 wireless access points on board. Once you climbed above 10,000 feet, they turned on the system and allowed you to use your laptop. Connecting to the AP was easy. I easily connected and filled out a form agreeing to a TOS.

Right now, they only offer Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Chat. I was able to use the mail but not the chat. You get dropped into a mobile version. You certainly are not going to do any heavy computing, but you can fire off some emails.

From the control panel, it appears they are teaming up with Amazon to provide shopping services. They also appear to have links setup for other mail providers like Gmail, Hotmail, and AOL. One notable item was a link for MicroSoft's webmail for exchange users.

Certainly a check in the right direction. I was able to use the service for about 15 minutes before it died out and never came back.
