The Wall Street Journal (subscription required for full article) has a small story buried on page B3 about copyright infringement.
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) is suing www.youtvpc.com and www.peekvid.com because they link to web sites that have content that violates copyrights.
The sites don't actually have any movie content but they are the target of the lawsuit because they are enablers of copyright infringement.
I find this and similar cases interesting because it raises significant questions about how much you have to vet the content on a site not under your control. Suppose someone asks you to link to their blog, article or other content only later to find out that they do not have the right to use the content. Are you now culpable?
I suspect the key legal question is "Are they mainly in the business of linking to stolen content to make a profit?". Sort of like the guy who knows someone that will sell you a cheap computer.
The MPAA certainly has a right to protect their copyrights but it will be interesting see what type of liable these sites incur by simply linking to the infringing content.
