Ensim X AnnounceIt! Messages

September 14, 2007 2:23 PM

Lately, we've seen quite a few people confused by the update announcements in Ensim 10.0 and above. They're confused because they've requested updates and been told their server is up-to-date but they still see messages like this when they log into the control panel:

06/27/2007 - Ensim Pro/Basic for Linux v10.3.0 has been released. Click here to download.
07/18/2007 - Ensim Pro/Basic for Linux v10.2.0 hotfix 4 has been released. Click here to download.
07/18/2007 - Ensim Pro/Basic for Linux v10.1.0 hotfix 13 has been released. Click here to download.

Clicking the link takes you off to the knowledge base article with instructions on how to install the hotfix, or in the case of 10.3.0, the information page for that version of Ensim. So was your Ensim version updated or not? What do these messages mean?

These notifications are generated by Ensim and delivered via their AnnounceIt! system, a new feature of Ensim X. AnnounceIt! allows messages to be sent out to server admins, resellers, and site admins. By default, when you log into your control panel as the server administrator, you will see whatever messages Ensim has pushed through AnnounceIt!.

Three things you should know about AnnounceIt!:

1. Messages are not dynamic. They are not specific to your version of Ensim or your OS and they do not go away, even after the hotfix has been applied.

2. Often, they're not even up-to-date! Latest hotfixes are as follows:

10.0.0: hotfix 19, released 07/27/2007
10.1.0: hotfix 14, released 08/02/2007
10.2.0: hotfix 5, released 08/03/2007
10.3.0: hotfix 1, released 08/06/2007

3. You can disable AnnounceIt! notifications. When viewing the Server Administrator Dashboard, you'll find the Configuration menu. Select AnnounceIt!. You can check the box for Ignore announcements from Ensim and click Update.

If you want to check your server for the latest hotfixes, you can do so at the command line. First, you'll need go to the EnsimPro for Linux page and click the hotfix you want to check. Listed in the knowledge base article will be the rpms associated with the selected hotfix. Once you have a package name you can run an rpm -qi to get information on a specific package.

So if you wanted to check for one of the packages in the latest Ensim 10.3.0 hotfix you might run the following command:

rpm -qi epl-apache

This will return information on the current epl-apache package on your server. The release number should match the release number on the hotfix package, in this case, rhel.4ES.12.
