Red Hat Linux

Red Hat is dedicated to providing enterprise-level open source operating systems. RHEL's long life and commitment to support makes it an ideal candidate for enterprise-level servers. The latest Red Hat Enterprise Linux release, RHEL 5, was released in March 2007. As a general rule, we do not recommend running OS versions that have reached their end-of-life. We suggest you migrate as soon as possible, particularly if your OS reached EOL more than twelve months ago. We offer support for a number of Red Hat releases, including support for those that have reached their EOL. For new installations, we currently recommend installing RHEL 5.

Release Date* End-of-Life Recommended
Red Hat 7 August 30, 2000 April 30, 2004
Red Hat 8 September 30, 2002 April 30, 2004
Red Hat 9 March 31, 2003 April 30, 2004
RHEL 2.1 May 17, 2002 May 31, 2009^
RHEL 3 October 23, 2003 October 31, 2010^
RHEL 4 February 15, 2005 February 29, 2012^
RHEL 5 March 14, 2007 March 31, 2014^

*This is the initial release date.

^These dates are based on Red Hat's statement that they will support every RHEL release for seven years. Red Hat guarantees the following:

  • Full Support - 2.5 years after initial release
  • Deployment - 3 years after initial release
  • Maintenance - 7 years after initial release

Once RHEL products have reached the end of the Deployment support stage we do not recommend installing them on new systems. The Maintenance support stage only includes Security errata and select critical bug fixes. No new updates are released during the Maintenance stage. For this reason we no longer recommend RHEL 2.1. RHEL 3 will reach its Maintenance stage on June 30, 2007.

: We support and recommend these versions.

: While we provide support for these versions, we do not recommend using them for new installations. test
